Printing data - technical specifications

General

  • PDF-X3
  • PDF version 1.3
  • 3 mm bleed
  • No cutmarks
  • No colour bar

Colours

Production uses the CMYK colour space by default. You can also transmit data in RGB but they will be converted to the CMYK colour space for production, which can result in colour deviations. We use the standard Apple RGB colour profile for the conversion.

Colours - Default-Profiles

  • CMYK: ISOCoated v2 (ECI)
  • RGB: eciRGB_v2

Further Details: http://www.eci.org/en/downloads

Fonts

  • Embed all fonts
  • Subsetting OK, but is not necessary
  • Do not convert fonts into character paths

Note: Headlines in character paths (if not otherwise available) are OK, but book texts entirely converted to character paths, for example, can lead to delays or stoppage in production (excessive computing requirements / server load).

Technical elements

The best results will be obtained if you transmit technical elements (logos, diagrams etc.) as character paths / curves.

Images

The minimum requirements for digital printing are 200 dpi. If we are producing exclusively or optionally in offset, images must be transmitted in 350 dpi.

Bitmaps

Please use bitmap graphics (1-colour images) in a resolution of at least 600 dpi for signatures or scans of technical drawings.

Tile patterns

Tile patterns in PDFs are not permitted.

PDF library

We recommend PDFlib from PDFlib GmbH for the automated creation of PDF documents.

The library has been developed in collaboration with printing specialists for years and permits optimum results to be obtained and the widest possible spectrum to be modelled.

Optimising data

Print data must be optimised before transmission, that is, even during collection of data and/or by preparation of the print data.

For example: Your product will be customised with photos that every user can upload themselves. These photos are suitable, for example, for printing in life size, but in layout they will be placed in postage stamp size. These data must be recalculated so that the data volume corresponds to the data volume actually needed.

Unoptimised data lead to production time being very long and/or the order automatically being rejected by PDI.

Example

A PDF for an A4 letterhead (210×297 mm) has a PDF page size of 216×303 mm.

That is, you transmit the print data. We always handle the print data preparation (pages per sheet, cutmarks, controlling of the print target / sheet sizes, etc.) for you.

There is no need to define the different cutting boxes. If in doubt, set them all to the PDF page size.
